BRUNSWICK, Maine — Newlyweds Ashley Perkins and Rod Salguero are breathing sighs of relief today as their missing dog Popeye is now resting comfortably in their Brooklyn home.
The mini Australian Shepherd went missing July 3 in Maine. Heartbroken and unwilling to give up hope he’d be found, Perkins and Salguero created the Find Popeye facebook page, and cross posting on Maine Lost Dog Recovery page. Sightings were consistently reported and the couple returned each weekend to Maine to search.

Volunteers, Maine Lost Dog Recovery and Brunswick Animal Control all assisted in the search. They set traps, put up posters, even installed cameras to capture and document any and all sightings. With over 2,000 likes to their Facebook page, it’s clear that the community was willing and eager to help.
When searching for a dog, especially one that’s a bit skittish like Popeye, they will often run away from the strangers who are trying to help them. Perkins and Salguero consulted the experts as to how to best capture Popeye and bring him back home. Each weekend they’d go out to Maine with Olive, their Maltese, in the hopes that familiar scenes and sounds would lure Popeye their way.
Finally, success. After being found on School Street July 25, Popeye was in the car, with the couple and they were on their way home. He was vet-checked and found to have some ticks, lost a bit of weight, and was pretty tired, but he’s going to be okay.
It was snuggles all around between Popeye, Olive, Rod, and Ashley. Now that this adventure’s ended, their honeymoon can officially begin.
