“Once you start, it’s hard to stop because the deluge of dogs about to be killed for no other reason other than overpopulation is never-ending and completely overwhelming,” says Cross.
According to the U.S. Humane Society, 2.4 million dogs are put down every year. Despite the overwhelming number of dogs that need to be saved, Cross hasn’t let it discourage her. Instead, she hopes that her mission will help inspire others to get involved with fostering and rescuing dogs in high-kill shelters. Her journey is a perfect example of one person making a difference against all odds.
Eventually, Cross’ passion for rescuing led her to open the Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue, which fosters and place dogs in forever homes. Through this organization and with the help of volunteers, Cross has now helped save 1,400 dogs from death row. It truly is astounding what a single person can achieve when they put their mind to it.
