In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, over 350 trained search and rescue dogs helped out at ground zero and the Pentagon. These dogs were extremely important in helping to locate human victims, by using their keen sense of smell and agility that directed the workers to the locations of the injured and deceased. In addition to the SAR dogs, there were 300 therapeutic dogs that were used to help comfort people at the site.

- Hansen worked at ground zero for approximately 150 days, far longer than of the other dogs. After his service in New York, he was given several rewards in recognition of his service. One honor was a large memorial statue placed in Long Island.
- Red worked for days as part of a team of 27 dogs that was given the task of finding DNA evidence in the Pentagon’s north parking lot.
- Sirius was the only police dog known to have been killed during the 9/11 attacks. Sirius, and his handler, David Lim, were performing a routine search of the South Tower when the North Tower was attacked. Sirius was killed instantly when the South Tower collapsed.
- Trakr and his handler James Symington went to work right away at the ground zero site and discovered signs of life under the rubble. Firefighters found Genelle Guzman, the last of the 20 survivors who had been in the buildings when they collapsed. She had been trapped 26 hours before Trakr found her.
- Jake and his handler Mary Flood helped at ground zero for 17 days until they were certain no people were left behind.
