I can feel it, this summer is definitely going to be a hot one—good news for those who stay inside air conditioned rooms, bad news for those with their dogs outside all day. It can be tough when you’ve got an energetic dog that wants to be outside a lot. But have no fear, we’ve got the best tips for you and your energetic dog right here. Follow these simple steps and your dog will be out of danger’s way for sure!
1. Apply pet sunscreen
Yes, there’s such a thing! You should apply pet sunscreen with an SPF of 15+ to your dog’s nose, ear tips, and any other area where their pigmentation might be low. The shorter your dog’s hair, the more sunscreen they’ll need.
2. Keep your dog hydrated
Heat stroke is a scary thing that can be deadly. Make sure you carry around extra water and a portable doggie bowl your dog can drink out of. Also, know to recognize the signs of heat stroke. Excessive panting, failure to respond to commands and a redder than normal tongue and gums are all signs that your dog needs medical attention.
3. Take breaks in the shade
If possible, take your dog under the shade every once in a while. They will be thankful to get a chance to catch their breath out of the sun.
4. Pay close attention to what your dog is sniffing/eating
There are lots of things that your dog can accidentally swallow or smell. Be sure to always keep an eye on what they’re doing. Trace where they’re walking, notice what they’re smelling, be sure to know what they’re eating. Many plants are dangerous to dogs and things like foxtails have spiky seeds that can get lodged in a dog’s ear, nose, eye or skin. Be aware of these problem plants in your area.
5. Know how to deal with bug bites
If your dog gets bitten, signs of discomfort may be whining or howling persistently. For simple bug bites, like those from ants, apply a cool compress and a paste of baking soda and water to soothe the area.
