A St Louis Children’s hospital is doing things a little differently when it comes to their cancer patients. They use dogs to heal and comfort. Sharon Johnson, a retired middle school counselor, is one of the many volunteers who come with their dogs at least once a week. She says it brings her as much joy as it does the kids. “You have little kids who are sick. They’re sad,” Johnson explains. “Some of them won’t get out of bed, and you walk into a room and now we have smiles, we have giggles. We have kids who are willing to get out of bed.”
Maybe this is why dogs are man’s best friend. They heal us on a level that we don’t understand. They heal our hearts, they love us, and sometimes that’s all we need.
