7. It wasn’t until after World War I that the breed gained popularity.
- 1. Originally bred to be ratters: The Scottish Terrier was bred to hunt den animals, such as rabbits, foxes, badgers, and rats.
- 2. Very little shedding: This dog makes the perfect pet due to the lack of shedding. However, they do require weekly brushings.
- 3. Second most wins for Westminster Dog Show: The Scottish Terrier has won the show nine times, starting in 1911. The Wire Fox Terrier has won more times.
- 4. Originally the Aberdeen Terrier: They were named after the town of Aberdeen in Scotland, as shown with the yellow do.
- 5. Have lived in the White House three times: Three different presidents have had Scottish Terriers in the White House during their term – Franklin D. Roosevelt. George W. Bush and Dwight Eisenhower.
- 6. One of five breeds originally from Scotland: One common ancestor eventually split off into five different breeds. These breeds include West Highland White Terrier, Cairn Terrier, Skye Terrier, and Dandie Dinmont Terrier.
- 7. It wasn’t until after World War I that the breed gained popularity.
- 8. Popular Monopoly piece: The board game was established in the 1930s and the dog game piece is a favorite among players. At the time of the game release, Scottish Terriers were the most popular pet in America.
- 9. Jock from Lady and the Tramp: Many of you may remember Jock from the classic Disney movie. He is without doubt the most popular Scottish Terrier to be featured in a movie.
- 10. Radley bags mascot: Founded in 1998, this London based accessories manufacturer features a Scottish Terrier tag on the bags. It was introduced in the fall of 2000 and became a permanent feature in 2001 after an increase of interest from consumers.
