There is no denying that one of the cutest and most in-demand companion dogs is the Shih Tzu. This adorable lap dog originated in China although there are claims that it originated up high in Tibet. Here are 10 of the most interesting known facts about the Shih Tzu.

1. Shih Tzu Means “Lion Dog” – Technically, the full name of this dog breed is Tibetan Shih Tzu Kou which literally means Tibetan Lion Dog. This lovable family dog with long silky hair is the closest known descendant of Senji, the prehistoric Chinese wolf. It was named for the Lion because it was specifically bred to resemble one.

Health Concerns – Common ailments to plague the Shih Tzu breed include: hip dysplasia, portosystemic shunt of the liver, Intervertebral Disk Disease (IVD), brain problems, such as cancer and cases of epilepsy, Hypothyroidism, and, like many dogs with short snouts, can possibly be prone to breathing problems. That being said, getting your dog from a reputable breeder can help eliminate some of these issues. Always check the health records of the pup if you have that option.

- 6. Hypoallergenic And High Maintenance – Because Shih Tzus have hair and not fur, they do not shed in the same way as many dogs. The hair does actually shed, but is caught in the dog’s dense undercoat. You’re not going to see as much hair on your furniture, clothes, and carpet as you would with other dogs, however, please note there are some Shih Tzus that do actually shed. If a Shih Tzu is not brushed daily, the hair that is caught in the undercoat can cause matting problems. Because of it’s hairy coat, it is one of several breeds suggested as a hypoallergenic pet.
- 7. Royal History – The Shih Tzu was bred to sit around the palace of the Emperor of China, and bark when people or animals approached. They were also used as bed warmers to generate heat on cold nights. It is believed that this ornamental breed was created by breeding the Pekingese with a Tibetan dog breed, the Lhasa Apso, and recent DNA tests confirm this as one of the oldest breeds of dog, and information about the Shih Tzu dates back to 624 AD in documents, paintings and other objects of art.
- 8. Almost Disappeared Forever – The Shih Tzu was almost wiped out completely during the Chinese Revolution. Seven males and seven females were said to have the very last, and after they were smuggled out, an effort to reestablish the breed began in the West. Now all Shih Tzus can be traced back to one of these 14 dogs. Today, there are several hundred thousand registers Shih Tzus roaming the earth, not to mention the many mixed breeds with Shih Tzu blood.
- 9. AKC Approved – The Shih Tzu was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1969, and is the 17th most popular breed. They also come in 14 different colors, which are all acceptable by breed standards.
- 10. You’re Most Loyal Friend – Shih Tzus are devoted, wholly and completely, to you and your needs. A Shih Tzu will by your side for hours, and occasionally gaze up at you in adoration. If you want a dog who does his own thing and only occasionally bothers to notice you, this breed may not be the one for you. But if you want a pet who thinks it’s all about you, then this is your dog. And don’t worry about him never leaving your side, you will love this little pup as much as he loves you.
