SONOMA COUNTY, Calif — Who owns the black and white stray? That’s the question two women in California are fighting over in court.
According to one woman, Tiffany Mestas, she raised and bottle-fed the tuxedo cat until he went missing. Mestas claims she took him and three others from the same litter in 2005. Two years later, the cat went missing and she put up signs offering a $1,000 award. He never showed up.
The other woman, Therese Weczorek, says she adopted the stray from a rescue five years ago when she picked him up after making a $50 donation at a cat rescue. Now her attorney argues that the cat is “extremely content” and placing it in a new environment would be “extremely stressful.”
There has been no set date for the trial but neither side looks like it is backing down. As Mestas’ attorney says:
“The cat has it made. He has two women that loved him.”
