One year ago, a two month old kitten was brought to a veterinary clinic in Bydgoszcz, Poland to be euthanized. He was in a very serious health condition and apparently there was no hope for him.
But then they heard him purr and one of the veterinarians of the clinic, Lucyna Kuziel-Zawalich, couldn’t resist the temptation to save him. Cats sometimes purr when they are about to die but this was not the case. Despite of the terrible lung infection he presented, he managed to survive. For a while he needed to be isolated from other animals and he was staying alone in an office.
But after some time, he proved how great was the decision to save him because not only did he survive; he actually became part of the clinic’s staff: he became a full-time nurse.
They named him Radamenes, after a character from a Polish TV series from 1984, “Siedem życzeń” (7 Wishes). The character is a black cat saved by a boy that decides to grant him 7 wishes to thank him for saving his life.
Radamenes, the black cat nurse, may not grant wishes but he certainly grants comfort to the clinic’s patients. The veterinarians from the clinic say he is particularly fond of those who are in a more serious condition, but he cares the same for dogs and cats.

He helps them recover from surgeries; he goes to them and hugs them or cuddles with them warming them up. Sometimes, they say, he even licks them and cleans his wounds.
He has become a huge sensation in Poland and people go from everywhere just to see him because they believe he’ll give them luck.
