HALIFAX, Nova Scotia — With the federal election in full swing, there’s one particular candidate that’s getting a lot of attention. His name is Earl Grey. He’s a cat, and his platform is one that any animal lover will stand behind — strengthening the animal cruelty laws in the Canadian Criminal Code.
Though Earl can’t legally enter the race— there’s that silly rule you have to be human to run — his owners Hugh and Kathy Chisholm are no strangers to how effective a cat can be in spreading such a vital message. We first introduced you to the Chisholm’s when we brought you Tuxedo Stan’s story.

Stan’s run for Mayor of Halifax garnered a great deal of media attention and support from the likes of Ellen DeGeneres and Anderson Cooper. Stan’s goal was to improve the lives of his feline friends and he promoted the importance of spaying and neutering.
The Tuxedo Party of Canada recently unveiled their Election Platform for Earl Grey. Given that this is a federal race, they’re tacking an issue that so many feel passionate about. The animal cruelty section of the Criminal Code of Canada was written in 1892 and is so incredibly outdated that those who commit heinous crimes aren’t receiving the punishment that so many feel they deserve.
The Tuxedo Party wants to see that change, with Earl Grey asking the question, “Who stands on guard for me?” They are lobbying for strengthened animal cruelty laws and want to spread the message that animals in Canada deserve utmost protection under the law.
Earl Grey’s campaign has taken off, with media outlets in Canada and the U.S. already covering his campaign. He’s most certainly following in the pawsteps of his brother, Stan, in garnering all this support and attention. If you’d like to show your support you can purchase your very own campaign swag.
