We all know that cats are full of personality in their body languages and their faces. Talk about sass!
The Manul cat, also known as the Pallas’s cat, is a small wildcat found in Central Asia. This breed is unfortunately near threatened due to habitat degradation, prey base decline and hunting. Their beautiful thick pelt with ‘frosted tips’ is very warm, causing many humans to hunt the cast. Thankfully, hunting of this felid is prohibited in all range countries except Mongolia, where it has no legal protection.
They are solitary animals, spending their days lounging in cages or burrows, and emerge to hunt mid-afternoon. They feed on small prey such as gerbils, voles and partridges.
They live high up on the mountains, around 16,000 feet in the sky. This means they are exposed to very few viral infections, and therefore have a weakened immune system. When brought into captivity, they have a low rate of survival, with mortality rates in new litters as high as 44.9% within the first 30 days —the highest of any small cat. In 2010, there were 47 Pallas cats in 19 institutions that are members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
They are about the size of a domestic house cat, but look much larger because of their huge thick coat. They are adorable, fuzzy, fluffy, and have the most expressive faces ever. Although they look like an oversized house cat, remember that these are wild animals that are restricted to zoos and the wild.
