LAKE HAVASU Ariz. — No one knows where River came from, but they do know she’s lucky to be alive after being found among the wreckage of a sunken ship. It’s believed that the Tortoiseshell cat somehow stowed away in the ship, and was trapped underwater for close to an hour before the boat was dragged to shore and they found her.
John Zucalla of Dive Time Recovery dragged the wreckage ashore and instructed mechanics to remove the water from the ship. They were shocked to find a cat hidden in the front compartment. Zucalla says:
“The cat was trapped, hungry, wet and scared. I’ve been doing this for 15 years, and I’ve never found a live animal on a sunken boat. It’s miraculous that she survived.”
Originally it was thought that she was the prior captain’s cat, but then they discovered he didn’t own one. River, also known as Lucky, is now in the care of the Western Arizona Humane Society, and if she’d not been claimed by Thursday she was available for public adoption.
The shelter staff has fallen in love with her, describing her as a nice cat that’s really warmed up to them since her arrival. There’s already been some interest from local residents looking to give her a warm, dry, forever home; it’s not expected she’ll be in shelter care for much longer.
