In the wake of the controversy surrounding the killing of Cecil the lion, perhaps the only positive thing we can take away is the attention this incident has brought to the plight of big cats. National Geographic is launching their Big Cats Initiative, with an aim to raise both money and awareness in support of upcoming World Lion Day on August 10.
The goal is to create a worldwide virtual high five chain across social media networks featuring the hashtag #5forBigCats. Here’s how it works:
- Tag 5 friends to send a virtual high five.
- Donate $5.
- Watch the chain grow!
Celebrities like Arnold Schwarzenegger are already advocating for the cause through Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Participants are encouraged to get creative with their posts and photos to encourage others to share.
All the money raised will go toward the protection of big cats and the preservation of their natural habitats. Visit National Geographic’s website to learn how you can donate. Your donation can make a difference by supporting the efforts of the organization and the scientists in the field fighting to save these majestic creatures.
