The adoption rates at a Colorado pet store and its cat sanctuary skyrocketed all thanks to its new giant cat.
Andre the giant cat was first spotted wandering around downtown Fairplay in November. He was rescued from the streets and taken into a cat sanctuary which is operated by the owner of High Paw Pet Supplies.
“Within a month of us having him, people coming in to see him and to visit, the adoption rate for the rescue skyrocketed,” said Miyuki Takeda, owner of High Paw Pet Supplies.
Andre was 20 pounds when he was taken in and according to the vet, he was still underweight and needed to stay at the sanctuary to get up to a healthy weight. Takeda decided to make Andre the store cat while she nurses him back to health.
Takeda also wondered about Andre’s breed.
“When he first came to us, he showed a lot of signs — he acts like a hybrid,” Takeda said, noting his gravely voice, his issues digesting processed food and, of course, his size, “We think perhaps he has Savannah in him — those are huge cats.”
