Last week we published an article about a man that was stopped by the police, searched because he seemed suspicious and found with a cat bound with tape inside his backpack. The cat was saved in time and the man was arrested. His name is Cody High and he’s 24 years old.
The police were able to search him because he was on probation due to prior convictions for drug possession. When they asked him about the cat, he claimed the cat was already dead but he admitted owning the tape inside his backpack.
He is facing up to three years in prison if he’s convicted. But now he’s pleaded not guilty and his aunt, Jena High, showed up in court to vouch for him. Action News talked to her and she described Cody as an animal lover, as a person not capable of hurting an animal – nevertheless a cat, because it is his favorite animal.
She said he just got caught in a very unusual act. “Cody found that backpack like that with the cat dead in it, then he was going to go bury it”. She admits he has a drug problem but it wouldn’t make him torture an animal.
However, prosecutors don’t believe it because it doesn’t match what he said when he was arrested. They fear this could just escalate.
As for the cat, he’s almost back to normal and he has recovered fast. But they still haven’t located the owner.
