LA CRUCES, NEW MEXICO – The government of Doña Ana County have set up a “cat library” that allows their employees to take their breaks in a room full of kitties or select one to hang out with at their desk.
Their head of PR had the brilliant idea of bringing in cats from a local shelter to do the double duty of letting the employees play with them, and to help the cats get adopted into forever homes.
It’s also really good therapy for both the humans and the lonely shelter cats, as Animal Care Center of Mesilla Valley say they try to bring over cats that “need a little special attention.”
Tiffany Tillison, the employee who posted the original photo of the cat library to Reddit, explained “We have had cats that are blind, that have been abused, that were abandoned.”
The library usually has around 5 cats at any given time, and employees can either play with them in the “Kitty Kondo” space or take them to their desk to hang out while they work. Luckily they don’t seem to be a problem for any allergic employees, as people are respectful of their coworkers who might have a problem with dander.
“There is a chair in the condo for people who want to take breaks in there and spend time with the cats,” she said. “My office mate is allergic, and I just make sure to wash my hands and lint roll before I go back to my desk, and he hasn’t had any problems yet,” Tillison explained.
The cat library just celebrated their 100th cat adoption, so obviously this amazing idea is working!
“Most animal shelters are out of the way outside of towns (usually outside the city limits), so you have to really be thinking of adopting an animal to take the trouble to go over there,” she said. “But with this program, hundreds of people come through our lobby every day, so they can’t miss seeing them!”
They even made a video about the project featuring some of their fantastic felines:
