Last Friday Nevada Humane Society (NHS) put a call out to their local community for cat and kitten food. They weren’t sure how it would turn out, because they were going into a holiday weekend, but they were running low and knew they were in need. Amazingly, animal lovers answered the call and then some! So far, over 5,000 pounds of food has been donated and more has continued to come in over the past few days. They thank their community for helping by directly donating food, spreading their message on social media, and/or donating cash for them to be able to purchase food.
During the summer months, NHS may become home to thousands of cats and kittens. A lot of the kittens that come in are too young to be adopted, so NHS places them in their extensive Foster Program. Volunteers care for the kittens and provide them with socialization opportunities until they are ready to come back to the shelter. NHS provides food, bedding, toys, and medical care to the kittens with their volunteer foster families, which significantly improves the willingness of people to become fosters.
Overall, their program is highly successful and they attribute a lot of that to being in such a caring community, which makes them also very proud. If you’re in the area, they’re offering free cat adoptions this coming weekend! Watch a news report on the incredible donations here:
