SAN FRANCISCO —A four-year-old Chihuahua brought traffic to a halt Sunday morning after police had to set up roadblocks to try and catch him. Multiple people called the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in the early hours of April 3rd, to alert them to the little dog running down the freeway. An officer arrived at the scene on his motorbike but was unable to scoop the Chihuahua up as he bolted towards the San Francisco Bay Bridge.

The CHP then closed the Bay Bridge and set up roadblocks, as they attempted to block the Chihuahua in. After a few unsuccessful attempts, Officer VU Williams was able to distract the dog with his jacket and capture him. Officer Williams revealed to the media, “It took a while, I mean he was fast.”

The tiny fugitive was later picked up by county animal care, where he still remains while waiting to be claimed by his owners. The dog was wearing no tags and he was not microchipped, so staff hope that someone comes forward. For now they have renamed the dog ‘Ponch,’ after a character in the police drama show CHIPs. The character played by Erik Estrada was infamous for his highway pileups. Watch the high speed chase in the video below.
