SOUTH CAROLINA — We first introduced you last week to Sammie a young Boxer puppy who, quite obviously hadn’t seen much kindness, love, care, or compassion in his 16 weeks on this earth. He suffered unconscionable abuse. Spray-painted, shot in the head by a 22 caliber rifle, and then dragged behind a car, Sammie’s was fighting for his life. He was left at the shelter, signed over as a stray, and staff were horrified by what they saw. Rescue Dogs Rock NYC stepped in and had him immediately transferred to their veterinary partner to receive the urgent care he needed.

Sammie’s condition was undoubtedly critical. He was incredibly weak. His back leg was so horribly damaged, it rendered him unable to stand. Sammie needed all the tender loving care he could get. What happened next was something touched the hearts of every animal lover. He found a friend, a companion that understands, and isn’t afraid to stick by his side as he battles for his life. His new guardian is Simon, a one-year-old Border Collie who’s currently battling mange.

When Simon met Sammie, he did something remarkable. He placed his paw on top of Sammie’s in a gesture to comfort him, letting him know he was there. It’s an image that’s been shared worldwide, thousands of times over, and one that Rescue Dogs Rock NYC says proves “our companion animals DO FEEL pain and show compassion for others ….Do not ever doubt the POWER of our beloved companion animals !!!” Simon has stuck by Sammie’s side as he battles to get better, and recover from the horrific abuse he suffered.
Sammie’s recently had surgery that lasted over three hours in efforts repair the damage to both his legs. To date it’s still uncertain whether Sammie will lose that back leg as infection remains a major concern. During the procedure the surgeons found that his back right leg was worn down to the bone, with 3/4 of that bone missing. It was a very intricate surgery, but they’re hopeful they’ll been able to save the leg.
His front leg seems to be healing well. He had severe infections due to the deep lacerations that were not treated for several days. Sammie’s received lots of love, treats, and special visitors as he recovers from his injuries. He’s even got a few signatures on his cast. Throughout it all though, his buddy Simon continues to check in on his canine friend. They’ve definitely developed a special bond as they battle to get better.
