Naples, Florida –All shelter dogs experience a mourning period, especially if they were surrendered by their family after many years of living together. The chances these dogs have of recovering depend a lot of the shelter’s conditions, will and commitment to them. A day off to decompress is always a great idea because that’s when you can catch a glimpse of the dog’s true personality and that may even help them find a home. So, let’s help Darby!

Her story is quite sad actually. She was surrendered to the Collier County Domestic Animal Services (DAS) on December 2015 by her heartbroken owner who got to the point where he couldn’t take care of her and knew she deserved better. His financial problems led to the loss of his house and to live in his car for a couple of months. A volunteer at the shelter said:
“Reluctantly, he realized this was no life for her, and he knew he had to give her up. When he brought Darby to the shelter, he was in tears. He had the entire DAS staff in tears too.”

Even though Darby went through a tough period initially, she has been holding on ok. She’s a happy dog that enjoys the company of other dogs and absolutely loves playing in pools.
She’s 8 years old and being a senior reduces her chances of getting adopted. That’s why the shelter is sharing her story to increase her chances of finding a home.
One of the volunteers took Darby out on a day trip to help her decompress and one of the places she visited was her house, in which she has a swimming pool. Darby was as happy as she could be. She even went down the slide!
She deserves that happiness every day. Let’s help her find a home. If you are interested in her, you can contact the shelter at their Facebook page or at 239-252-PETS. If you can’t take her, you can share her story. Maybe it will reach her future family.
