“I sold my house, almost everything I owned, and bought a van which I converted into what could eloquently be described as a space capsule hotel on wheels. But there was one problem, a little black cat. I wasn’t one for sticking to convention so I made the obvious choice, she was coming with me!”
After 10 years of working in a corporate job, Richard East of Tasmania, Australia made a life changing choice and took off for a life of travelling in a Volkswagen van –starting of course in Australia. He packed only his most priceless and necessary possessions, which included Willow the cat.
For two years they have been travelling and they have already been to every state and territory in Australia. They decide where to go next as they go along, and they are not planning to stop any time soon. Maybe one day they will return to Tasmania but just for a summer. Richard is currently trying to set up a business so he can travel forever. He says he found his ideal way of life.
As for Willow, she seems to be perfectly adapted to the life on the road, she has an adventurous spirit and she knows the van is her home; the only thing that changes is her backyard.
Richard says she sleeps while he drives and when they arrive at a camp, he lets her explore –although most of the times they explore together.
“Now picture this, a man walking down a track to the river, a little cat, wide eyed with head held high follows closely behind him. They sit together by the bank watching the flow of the water”
On the road they have met other people that are also travelling with their cats. They all seem to agree that as long as the cat gets comfortable in the van, feels it as home and gets used to it, they can be great travel companions.
Richard is documenting his travels, so if you want to check out their pictures and some videos, you can follow them on Instagram, like them on Facebook and check out their “VanCatMeow” YouTube Channel.
