GRANADA, Spain — When Eduardo Rodriguez brought an emaciated dog into his rescue centre, he had no idea if she would even make it through the night due to her size. The little dog was named Barilla after the Spaghetti brand because she was so thin, weighing in at only 16lbs and looked like a bag of bones. Rodriguez rushed her to a veterinarian who revealed that she was on the brink of death as her organs threatened to collapse at any moment.
The team at the rescue centre shared that Barilla was in the worst condition that they had ever seen and that it appeared that the dog was locked away from food and water. Most street dogs in Spain survive by eating rubbish but because Barilla was the thinnest than any other dog they had ever seen, they believe her starvation was deliberate. According to Rodriguez, you could see every bone on her body and the very little muscle she had left could no longer support her when she attempted to stand or walk. Yet, after being hooked up to an IV drip for six hours and later fed, her road to recovery began.
The rescue centre team created a harness to help Barilla walk, while she regained enough muscle mass to do it on her own and they began to feed her consistently. Fast forward 7 weeks and the ten-month-old is a brand new dog, already weighing in at 46-pounds. Rodriguez admits that he fell in love with the dog who he believes is a Belgian Malinois and has personally adopted her. Barilla now lives at home with 37-year-old Rodriguez, his wife, their daughter and their five other dogs. Take a look at the video below to see the incredible transformation of Barilla.
