Dog’s loyalty will never stop to amaze me and this story will amaze you as well. It may even give you goosebumps and you may even feel like crying. You may feel angry and disappointed first, but you’ll pass through a moment of tenderness that will explode in happiness and surprise. But you won’t be indifferent towards it.
It happened in Russia – in Rostov to be exact. A place where winters are killers and January is one of the worst months. Abandoned animals in the streets have a hard time struggling to survive the winter and if they are injured, they won’t make it without some help.
And the dog of this story is alive because she got some help. First from the couple that rescued her from the dump in which she was left to die after a car hit her and broke her hind legs. Then by the only vet in Rostov willing to fix her with a discount. And finally from the girl who answered the call for help to take care of her while she recovered from the surgery. And this girl became the dog’s whole world because she represented a warm safe world. But let’s go back a little bit…
The dog was named Shavi that in Georgian means “black”. When she was rescued from the landfill in which she was abandoned, she was almost frozen, with many bruises and lacerations and in a lot of pain. The surgery performed on her included few metal screws into her legs which made her recovery a long and painful process. Thankfully there was a girl willing to make Shavi’s process a little less painful and more filled with love. The girl’s name is Nina Baranovska.
Nina was living with her mother, her 5-year-old daughter Maša and her three cats and two dogs. But she still made room for Shavi and after 6 months, Shavi was able to walk again. She learned some commands, she made friends with all the animals in the house and even though she was still uncomfortable with strangers and terrified of cars, she proved to be a very lovable and friendly dog.
She was now ready to find her forever home. Nina started looking for someone able to care for her and willing to love her – for her it was difficult considering she had a small salary, she was living with her mother, supporting her daughter and 5 more animals in the house.
Sadly she couldn’t find anyone in Rostov that could be Shavi’s new home. The only friends that replied lived in Boguchany in the Voronezh region, around 290 km from Rostov. But they really wanted Shavi and she would have fresh air and a nice life in the countryside. And so she left Nina’s house.
Few days later, Nina got a call from her friends telling her Shavi had escaped. She dug a tunnel under the fence and crawled out. She was nowhere to be found. Even though they looked all over the village for Shavi they had no luck.
Around the same time, Nina and her family had moved to a bigger house five stations away from the old one. And it was there, on the new home, where Shavi was found two weeks after she had escaped. She was thinner, exhausted and not in the best shape considering she had traveled almost 300 km, but she was happy and excited to be back in Nina’s arms.
How she managed to survive the 300-km journey and found Nina in a completely different house from the one in which she took care of her, is proof of how amazing dogs’ loyalty is and their power of will.
Nina helped Shavi get her health back one more time and this time, she was not giving her up again. Even though after her story was released and a lot of people offered her money to help her take care of this loyal dog, Nina refused because all she wanted to accomplish with her story is to show people what wonderful creatures dogs are so people stop dumping them, and instead care for them when they need our help.
