Weston, NSW, Australia –This is an incredibly sad story that shows us how powerful maternal instincts are, even in the worst brutal and cruel cases. What happened to this cat shouldn’t happen to any living creature and sadly, cases like this happen every day all over the world. But Princess is a fighter and her kittens were her motivation. Now, her rescuers are giving her the chance to fight and the means and the love to survive.
It was the beginning of May when Dee Walton, the owner of Sawyers Gully Animal Rescue, had a missed call from a woman who had been feeding a stray cat that had kittens in her yard. She had witnessed her neighbor swinging the cat by the tail and throwing her repeatedly against a trailer until her back and her hind legs broke, just because she entered his yard. She though the cat was dead and didn’t know what to do with the kittens.
Since Walton didn’t answer at the time, the woman contacted the local RSPCA who took the kittens to safety. And then the incredible happened: the next day the mother cat appeared. She managed to drag herself -in what must have been an excruciating pain- to the place where she had left her kittens and she was taken also to the RSPCA.

But Walton’s is a no-kill shelter and after a couple of weeks of dealing with bureaucracy, she managed to take the cat family with her. The kittens were in perfect state but Princess is not. The brutality she experienced left her paralyzed for life below her waist. Even though she can’t feel pain in her bottom half, her fractured back may still be sore (above and around) and it can take 8 weeks for that sort of injury to settle down.
In addition to that, she will never regain the use of her bladder, it will have to be manually emptied multiple times a day for the rest of her life, plus she will be prone to bladder infections. She needs to be checked by a vet twice a week and get constant urine and blood tests. What she went through was a life changing experience and her care requires a fulltime commitment. Dee Walton is willing to commit to Princess for as long as she shows the will to fight.
She has been asked more than once why not euthanize her, why not end her suffering. But Princess is not suffering and the difficulty of such care doesn’t seem like a reason to kill an animal. Walton says on her Facebook page:
“This girl wants to live (…) She’s a fighter and we won’t give up on her. Too many people walk away when it gets hard. She is not going to be let down anymore (…) She can teach us all a thing or two about not giving up and to fight for your right to live. She’s certainly an inspiration. If she can fight, we can fight and we are asking you to fight with us (…) Princess will remain in our care until the day she dies. We will not walk away!”
Even though what she has endured, she is still an amazing cat truly devoted to her babies. She watches them sitting up and when they are running around, she meows when she can’t see them or to call them over to her.
Dee Walton set up a GoFundMe page to cover for her expenses and in twelve days she collected more than $18,000. They are all amazed by the support they’ve got, they even asked people to stop donating for her since she’s already covered for weekly vet visits, tests and medical expenses, as well as her lifetime supply of puppy pads and her wheelchair, which is the next step to help her gain mobility.
As for the scumbag who did this to her, we are happy to announce that the 58-year old “man” from Weston was arrested and will face court in Kurri Kurri on June 30. Hopefully, he will get a fair sentence and not just a fine. Princess’ story is going around so much that hopefully it will show people that animal cruelty cannot be tolerated.
What Sawyers Gully Animal Rescue is doing for Princess is really remarkable and they deserve their story to be shared. If you wish to help them with the expenses of other animals’ care, they set up another GoFundMe account in which you can donate. Just follow this link.
