As someone who must say hello to every single dog she sees, only in my wildest dreams does a place such as Territorio de Zaguates exist. In Costa Rica, there are many abandoned dogs and most people prefer to adopt pure-bred dogs instead of the mixed breeds, zaguates. So, a non-profit shelter set out to create the “Land of Stray Dogs.”
Over 900 dogs are allowed to roam free across a huge expanse of land. Volunteers come in to make sure there is fresh water available all over the refuge and feed the dogs in a sheltered area. The dogs are also given baths and beds, and of course, plenty of love.

Every dog has a name and its own unique breed, in order to make each dog precious and rare. A couple of years ago, the shelter created an advertising campaign featuring all of the dogs with beautiful drawings. This increased adoptions massively and created quite a buzz about their unique “shelter.” Currently, they are running a campaign to have Costa Rica adopt better laws against animal abuse.
People are invited to come take a hike through the property and if a dog chooses you, you may adopt them. Alternatively, if you just want to come visit and be buried in piles of fur and kisses, that’s also an option. Someone buy me a plane ticket to Costa Rica.
