TAMPA BAY, Fla. — Workers at a Florida animal shelter were saddened to find a young, paralyzed dog left at their shelter along with a utterly heartbreaking letter from her owner. The owner could no longer take care of the dog.
The note began, “Please help my Genie.” The rest of the letter left the workers at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay shattered.
“Genie (her name) is paralyzed from I believe her hips to her hind legs. I tried to manage her pain with medication from her vet but they only ease her pain and she needs surgery. I cannot afford so I ask that the Animal Health Center heal her and find her a loving forever home. Thank you.”
Sadness aside, the Humane Society leapt into action. They knew they couldn’t let this little girl down. She deserved so much better.
The Florida community came together to help little Genie. By Friday the Humane Society had raised over $20,000 for their animals, including little Genie.
Genie is currently recovering and will be placed with a new, loving forever family as soon as she is strong enough.
“Even though she’s had some very severe trauma to her spine, she’s as sweet as can be. She’s bright, alert and she’ll give you little kisses,” said Sherry Silk, CEO of the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, to NH Voice.
“We see some Chihuahua and Pomeranian. We’re calling her a cute mix,” added Nash McCutchen, also with the Humane Society.

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay were true to their words in a post on their Facebook directed to Genie’s anonymous owner, “We will care for Genie. We will do our best to heal her body and mend her grieving heart. We will give her a second chance and find her a loving home. ”
