***Congratulations to Judge, the recipient of the 2015 3MD K9 Veterans Victory Award!***
March 13th is known as K9 Veterans day. The initiative was started in 2009 by retired military dog handler, Joseph J. White. Thanks to White’s efforts, Florida became the first state to officially proclaim March 13th as K9 Veterans Day.
Why March 13th you ask? It goes back to the birth of the United States K9 Corps on March 13th, 1942. Many of the first furry four-legged heroes to serve in the military never came home. Serving as sentries or messengers, they played an important role in keeping the troops safe. Most of the dogs were family pets prior to their service in the war.
Fast forward to 2014 and 13 states have now officially recognized K9 Veterans Day. We want to help draw attention to this very worthy cause and so we’ve created The K9 Veterans Victory Award. It will be awarded on March 13th to the dog with the most inspiring story as voted on, by you, our readers. We feel that all service dogs are worthy of consideration so we’ve narrowed down the potential winners to five of the stories we found most touching and inspiring amongst the thousands of dogs serving both across our great nation and around the world. Maverick and Judge are police dogs. Rona is a very special therapy dog, and Cila was a military dog who recently passed away. Before Cila left us, she logged over 100 ‘bomb-sniffing’ combat missions.
The most inspiring story, picked by you, our readers, will be awarded the 3MillionDogs K9 Veterans Victory Award.
Scroll down below to get the scoop on all five dogs and vote. We’ll share the results on March 13th here on the site, so stay tuned.
Voting is now closed and we’re ecstatic to announce that Judge is the recipient of the 3MD K9 Veterans Victory Award! R.I.P. Judge. Thank you for your service.
