VANCOUVER ISLAND, British Columbia — Limara Yakemchuk has scrutinized the way a mailman handled her barking dog, after he pepper sprayed the Chihuahua-Dachshund mix in the face. The woman reveals that she was in her front yard with her dog Branson, when the mailman walked in and the dog started to bark. According to Yakemchuk, Branson then approached the mailman to investigate but came to a stop about five feet away. Yet, that was close enough for the mailman to feel threatened and spray the dog in the face.

The woman now reveals that she thinks that the mailman overreacted given that he was standing very neutrally in her yard and didn’t once raise his voice at the dog. Instead the mailman just proceeded to spray the dog and then told Yakemchuk to wash him. At the time the female apologized for the dogs barking but didn’t realize that the mailman had sprayed him.
A CTV news cameraman caught up with the mailman who admitted that he sprayed the dog because he could see his teeth and felt threatened. However, Yakemchuk still believes the man could have handled the situation better like verbally telling her to pick up her dog if he truly felt threatened. Canada Post released a statement saying, “In the right circumstance, any dog can bite – any size, any breed, especially when the dog perceives it is protecting family or home.” Every Canada Post worker is given a pepper spray to protect themselves from animals that threaten them. How do you think this situation should have been handled? Watch the news report above.
