Checkers the search and rescue dog, was one of the dogs used in the fatal 2014 Oso mudslide in Washington. Later that year Checkers went missing for two days. It had appeared he had wandered off but for no good reason, since this was out of character for Checkers.
Checkers had saved a Corgi who had slipped into a neighbourhood pool and was drowning. Unable to get out, Checkers helped the Corgi to safety. A neighbour witnessed parts of the event, but by the time it was all over Checkers was gone.
Once the neighbour realized it was Checkers, they called out for him and he emerged from the woods. Checkers was then reunited with his owner, Samuel Peterson.
