It takes just $50 to get a canine DNA test to find out what breed your dog is and a California Humane Society is using this technology to homeless dogs advantage.
The Peninsual Humane Society and SPCA in Burlingame near San Francisco have been doing free DNA tests using the slogan “Who’s Your Daddy?” The DNA results for their shelter dogs gives staff the opportunity come up with breeds of their own. They get a lot of Chihuahua mix type dogs that sometimes take a while to get adopted.
The shelter is also allowed to get creative with breed names. A dog whose test came back as Chihuahua-Australian-Shepherd-Jack Russel Terrier-Collie was coined as a “Kiwi Collier” or a Yorkshire Terrier and Beagle mix became a “Yorkle.”
The shelter had many dogs that looked alike, so they took 12 of those dogs and did DNA tests. After revealing their DNA tests, the dogs were adopted within two weeks which was twice as fast as any 12 untested animals would receive.
The shelter plans to continue using DNA tests to help find homes for their dogs – quicker than they have been in the past.
