BEDFORDSHIRE, England — An eighty-year-old woman has sadly passed away after trying to retrieve her Poodle mix Jasper from the river. The pair were out for one of their usual walks on January 15th, when the dog ran into the water and owner Millie Smith jumped in to retrieve him. Unfortunately, the eighty-year-old great-grandmother did not know how to swim and was swept away by the current shortly after.
A few hours later, the woman’s body was found down the river, while Jasper made it out alive and was sitting on the riverbank waiting for help to arrive. Millie’s husband of sixty-one-years, Bev Smith, opened up about the incident and acknowledged that Millie and Jasper shared a very strong bond. Bev reveals, “Millie was just a lovely woman. She was kind and caring and full of life. She had always loved dogs, we’ve had loads over the years, an Alsatian, a Poodle and four Yorkies at one point. But Jasper stole her heart.” According to her husband, Millie would do anything for the Poodle and it’s clear to see just how much the dog now misses her.
Bev is heartbroken over the incident but admits that Jasper acts as a sweet reminder of his late wife. Millie is survived by her husband, her five children, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. As for Jasper, he will now remain with Bev, while Millie will live on in their hearts.
