DILLSBURG, Pa.— A generous 11-year-old girl has turned down birthday gifts this year, in hopes of raising funds for an injured puppy named Libre. Instead, Liberty Miller requested that people donate money to help pay for Libre’s vet bills. The pup was discovered on a farm earlier this month, with a severe case of mange and problems with his legs. Due to his condition, the pup was also completely hairless.

Upon learning about Libre, Liberty decided that she would do whatever it takes to ensure the pups survival. Following her birthday, Liberty impressed the veterinarians at the Dillsburg Veterinary Centre by donating $250. The veterinarian treating Libre, Dr. Ivan Pryor reveals, “I didn’t know Liberty before this, but I’m just really proud of her.” Thanks in part to Liberty and Dr. Pryor, Libre is now able to hold up his head and is expected to make a full recovery. Liberty says, “”I feel happy. Very, very, very happy. He needed a lot of help and I knew it would help him a lot.”
Libre was surrendered to the Lancaster County SPCA by his breeder, who will not be facing charges. The SPCA announced this decision, to the displeasure of the community who are urging the shelter to take a stand against this breeder. Hundreds of community members gathered outside of the SPCA on Sunday calling for the shelter’s executive director Susan Martin to resign and for charges to be pressed. It is unclear if the shelter will change their mind on the matter. Watch the full news story below.
