MASHIKI, Japan — More than 180, 000 people were forced into evacuation shelters last week, after twin earthquakes hit the island of Kyusha. Residents were forced to flee their homes after being hit with a 6.2 magnitude earthquake on Thursday and a 7.0 magnitude earthquake on Saturday. Between the two quakes, 968 people have been injured and 41 people have been killed. Many displaced people have spent days in shelters, while some are sleeping on the streets because there is simply not enough room for them at the shelters.

Photos have now surfaced from the incident, which show survivors cuddling with their dogs and carrying them out from the debris. It is uncertain when the displaced residents will be able to return to their homes as their have been aftershocks following the quakes. Rescue dogs are also hard at work in helping to locate any missing people.

In addition to the devastating quakes in Japan, Ecuador was also hit with a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on Saturday evening. So far the death toll has been calculated at 350 people but it is expected to rise. Images from the disaster scene, show rescue dogs trying to locate as many missing people as they can. It has been reported that at least 2, 000 people were injured in the earthquake. Thousands of troops have been sent in to all affected cities, to help with disaster relief efforts.
