NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — It’s been nearly a year since Cailtyn was found with her muzzle bound shut with electrical tape. It was an act of animal cruelty that sent shivers down the spines of many around the world. Her face swollen, unable to eat or drink for days, it was feared she might not survive her ordeal. The team at Veterinary Specialty Care – SC, led by Dr. Henry Bianucci, worked tirelessly to save her life while the love and support of strangers flooded into the shelter for this young dog. She has captured the hearts of many all of whom have closely followed her on her road to recovery.
Today, Caitlyn continues to thrive. She remains in the care of her foster mother who keeps track of her public appearance schedules, and even finds time to run three miles a day with her. As previously reported once the trial has concluded it’s expected that Caitlyn will be officially adopted by her foster family. Caitlyn will always bear the physical scars of the abuse she suffered, and continues to battle some emotional wounds. Caitlyn remains fearful of most men and the only dog she seems totally comfortable with is her foster sister, Oreo. All those around her continue to work diligently with her to ease her fears, and ensure the only touch she knows is a gentle and loving one.
The Charleston Animal Society has said that Caitlyn will “forever be the face of survival and love in our community” . Given that they’ve recently announced a fund will be established in her name. The Caitlyn Anti-Cruelty Fund aims to ensure that animal abusers are jailed, and prosecuted to the fullest extent. It will offer rewards for information, and fund outreach programs with the specific goal of preventing the neglect and abuse of animals in the community. Caitlyn’s alleged abuser, William Dodson, has remained jailed since June of 2015. Those closest to Caitlyn, acting as her advocates, are hopeful that there will be a trial this summer. They want her story told; they want justice for Caitlyn.
Caitlyn continues to be the face for animals in shelters everywhere. She’ll even be meeting a writer who will author her story told from her point of view. Her social events calendar likely more packed than yours or mine. And for those that missed out on the 2016 calendar that featured her, thanks to Dr. Bianucci’s sponsorship Cailtyn will again be featured in The Charleston Firefighters Calendar. Her appearance next year will feature a full two page spread with all funds raised going to Toby’s Fund. Calendars are available for pre-order, and with Caitlyn’s appearance they’re most certainly going to be a hot ticket item in 2017.
