BriAnne Wills is a photographer from Portland residing in New York, who has spent the past few years in Ukraine and Czech Republic building a fashion portfolio of pictures of classic and beautiful women. After moving to New York a year ago, in an attempt to meet new people, she decided to do a series of women’s nudes and it turned out the first model had a cat. This opened a new path in her career and the series of “Girls and Their Cats” was born.
She found herself facing a promising project and she decided to follow its lead. Originally, she intended to do only 20 pictures of New York women interacting with her cats, but the project went viral after she submitted it to Bored Panda and she decided to keep it alive. Right now the project has its own Facebook page, Instagram page, Tumblr page, with more than a hundred pictures of girls and their cats.
What is interesting about this project is that unintentionally — at least in the beginning— it was debunking the stereotype of the crazy cat lady. None of these women fit the stereotype: none of them are over 40 and still single, wearing bathrobes and curlers, living in a stinky house and none of them seem lonely and socially awkward. It’s quite the opposite actually: they are all beautiful, classy and stylish women that live in nice places and interact with their cats not just to fill the emptiness of their lives. For what we know, according to Wills, most of them are not even single.

Women who own cats are shown positively in this series. A lot of tenderness and love is what characterizes the pictures. People who own cats are a very versatile bunch. Having a cat doesn’t compensate lacking something in life, it actually gives a plus in it and makes it richer. And Wills’ project is helping to show that.
