YORK, Pa. — Two dogs were seized from a man’s backyard on Monday, after he was caught abusing one of them on camera. The video footage, which was captured by a neighbour over the weekend, was posted online and immediately went viral as people became outraged after watching it. The two-and-a-half minute footage, shows the one dog being yanked by its collar and then punched in the face by the aggressive owner. Shortly after, the man then proceeds to hit the dog with a belt as the dog yelps and howls in pain.
The SPCA first got word of the abuse on Monday, and the SPCA executive director Melissa Smith, says that the agency and the York City Police, both responded to the incident by showing up to the man’s property and taking the two Pit Bulls into custody. Smith cautions people posting videos of abuse online as they are key pieces to be used as evidence in an investigation but also because it can result in a hostile situation. Following the posting of this video online, some people from the community showed up to the abuser’s home, which could have caused more issues for the authorities.
The dogs are currently in custody at the York Country SPCA and Smith has revealed that both dogs are doing well. The video has since been removed from Facebook and the investigation is currently pending as the SPCA awaits the dogs examination results from the Veterinarian’s office.
