Yang Xiaoyun is a 65 year old retired teacher who has sacrificed almost everything for the dogs and cats she’s rescued.
Xiayoyun operates a shelter which in English translates to “Common Home For Stray Animals”. Her shelter houses over 1,500 dogs, and some 200 cats, most of which were neglected, abused, abandoned and left to die on the streets in China.
Last year Yang Xiaoyun, united with animal activists to rescue dogs from the China’s meat trade. 360 dogs were rescued and now live a more loving life.
This year her mission is to save more. She has saved $8,000 and will make the 1665 mile journey from her home in Tianjin to Yulin. Her hope is to save many dogs, as she stops the meat trucks and pays the traders to save them from their imminent slaughter.
Though the dogs do not live in the best of conditions, Xiaoyun has relinquished most everything she owns, including her property, to rescue these dogs providing them with food, water, care, and a loving space to live out their days. Rising every day at 5:00 a.m. she works until 10:00 p.m., daily to prepare meals for the animals, and ensure they’re all cared for.
Many of these animals are ill, have been severely neglected or just simply abandoned and Xiaoyun shows them only kindness and love.
She has moved many times, and vows to always bringing her rescues with her. She says:
“Where the dogs go, my home is”
