Most of you may have seen the big popcorn tins from around the holidays. The ones that are so large that you aren’t quite sure what to do with them once all of the popcorn is gone. Some people might want to reuse them for home décor, but did you know that you can upcycle them into a pet food canister? No more having to look at bulky food bags and they’re super easy to make.
If you don’t already own a popcorn tin, ask around for one or check out local flea markets. Make sure to wash the inside before using.
Decide on what color or design that you want for the outside. You can simply use brown paper and apply adhesive spray to stick it onto the can. Decorate the outside by stenciling on your dog’s name, paw prints, or the words “dog food”. You can personalize the canister however much you want to.
If you decide to paint instead, find your favorite color in a spray paint. Since most tins already have a smooth finish to them, spray painting will be a piece of cake. If you notice that the outside is a little rough, use sandpaper to smooth it down. Make sure to use a primer first before spraying on the main color. You can add personal touches once the paint dries.
Another option is to use chalkboard paint. You can apply it to just the lid or a small portion on the container. Or you can paint the entire canister with the chalkboard paint. You can add fun designs or even feeding instructions, which can be handy for a pet sitter.
Whatever you decide to do, make it unique and personalized for you and your dog. The possibilities are endless!
