LAKE MICHIGAN, Ill. — A determined Belgian Malinois who fell overboard swam 10 km and hiked 20 km to be reunited with her family. Ten-month-old puppy Rylee was boating with Edward and Kristin Casas on Sunday when she dove into Lake Michigan. The Casas were experiencing a mechanical problem and left Rylee’s side briefly when she decided to go for a swim. When Edward returned from below the deck, he noticed the puppy was missing, and immediately issued a “Dog Overboard” mayday call over the radio.
Within just a few hours, hundreds of people within the community rallied to try and locate the dog. A fisherman first discovered Rylee, who scooped her out of the water, only to let her loose on a remote beach. Once again Rylee was lost. When the Casas family got words of her whereabouts, they realised that she had swum up to 10 km before reaching that fisherman. The family then set out to search the area where Rylee was spotted.
Finally 24 hours later, Edward and Kristin were reunited with the happy pup about 20km away from the beach where she was dropped off. The Casas family say that Rylee some campers saw Rylee the following day and when they arrived in the area they managed to lead the dog out of the bushes by squeaking one of her favourite toys. Edward reveals, “Let me tell you, I’m not the kind of guy that cries — but, oh, did this make me cry. I am so proud of this dog.” The whole family is thrilled to be reunited.
