Ellen has a way of hearing about the everyday people making a big difference in the lives of both humans and animals alike. Jennifer Marion, an elementary school teacher from Raleigh, North Carolina, came up on Ellen’s radar for going beyond what a lot of people would do for their sick dogs.
Marion and her fiance, Jim Raschella, have always been animal lovers and are very involved with animal rescue and fostering. About a year ago, the couple decided to foster a new pup named Pearl, who had gone through some rough times. Pearl was treated poorly in her first home and lost a litter of puppies from being malnourished.

Somehow, Pearl found the right rescue group, because she soon became a foster mom herself to a litter of puppies whose mother had died. Pearl became to heal both in spirit and physically when she met the couple. Like many adoption stories, Pearl turned into a “foster failure,” and joined the fur family.
Unfortunately, Pearl started to lose weight a few months later and despite diagnosis after diagnosis, Marion and Raschella couldn’t find a solution. Finally, they took her to NC State Veterinary Hospital, where doctors were able to determine that Pearl was suffering from Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI). She could be treated, but it would be costly.
Pearl was in and out of the ICU, accruing a bill of almost $16,000, but the couple said it was never a “big” decision to fight for Pearl’s life. Pearl is still battling her disease, but with her family by her side and getting better every day.

Marion and Raschella found support from friends and family, but also from Marion’s students who set up a lemonade stand to raise money for Pearl. With one small stand, the five students were able to raise $120 and this was when Ellen caught wind of the story. After inviting them onto the show, Ellen surprised them with a check for $10,000 and a brand new, special lemonade stand.
