Some of us have already experienced that funny moment when there’s a knock at a door or the doorbell rings on TV, and our dogs go to our very own front door and begin barking. So, we already knew that there was some response to the sounds emanating from these curious boxes humans watched.
Truth be told, dogs do watch TV.
If you’ve recently upgraded televisions (especially from an old tube TV to a newer HD model) you might have noticed your pooch has become especially interested in what you’re watching, and perhaps even watching with you. According to Ernst Ropstad (who specializes in animal vision) of the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science, in all likelihood dogs see the TV as well as just about anything else.
Newer model HDTV’s provide the best viewing experience for our pets because they have more frames per second than older models. If your dog’s watching an old tube TV it’s akin to us watching an old film. So, that’s why the newer models garner the most response and interest.
Dogs do see color differently though. Where we see red, they see yellow. We have different vision than our dogs as we have more cone cells. Cone cells are the receptors on our retina. Humans have 3 and our dogs see with 2.
Dogs will often jump, bark, turn their heads to the side, or have other curious and funny reactions to what’s on the tube. It’s because they think what they see it’s real. There is familiar on-screen motion over a steady backdrop. Dogs prefer shots taken lower from the ground and like to watch TV more at their level.
With the advent of newer TV’s comes specialty TV channels designated just for our pooches. DOGTV is a 24/7 TV channel dedicated to doggie vision. It’s dog-friendly television that they say is “scientifically developed to provide the right company for dogs when left alone”. They have different segments, each with a different focus (relaxation, stimulation, and exposure) that last for three to six minutes to keep your pooch entertained.
So, you can grab some snacks, snuggle up, cuddle up and put on some dog-friendly television for you and your four-legged friend.
