BELMONT, N.C. — Have you ever wondered if you dog is really happy while they spend time at doggy day care? Well, this Golden Retriever loves his doggy day care so much that he ran away from home and headed right to his favorite place — day care.
Five-year-old Riley, a Golden Retriever from North Carolina, wasn’t supposed to be at doggy day care on May 6, but that didn’t stop him from showing up.
It all started when Tonia Mosteller was walking Riley that morning and they ran into a pack of dogs from his day care. This encounter would lead to Riley’s escape plan. Operation: Get To Happy Dog Café.
“Riley was crying because he loves to play, he loves Happy Dog’s,” Mosteller told CNN.
When Mosteller went for her daily run, she left Riley in her enclosed backyard. When she returned, Riley was no where to be found.
It turns out that Riley figured out how to lift the latch to the gate and made the one mile trek to Happy Dog Café, where he waited patiently at the front door for someone to notice him. The city-savvy pooch knows his way around town and didn’t have any trouble finding his way to his friends at the day care.
“We noticed a dog sitting outside waiting to be let in,” Happy Dog Café owner Teresa McCarter told CNN. She remembers exclaiming, “Oh my gosh, it’s Riley!”
McCarter called the Mostellers to let them know about their Houdini. She told them that since he went through all that trouble to get there that he might as well stay the day.
“Of course,” McCarter adds, “he stayed for free.”
